The fastest route to a successful pregnancy for many patients is conventional lVF. With this procedure, individually tailored fertility medications are given to the mother-to-be to stimulate the growth and development of many eggs. This stimulation takes a few days, during which time the woman will be monitored in our office 2-3 days. This is done with ultrasound imaging and blood tests. Adjustments are made in the medicine to achieve the best outcome.

An “egg retrieval” is performed in the office once the eggs are ready. In this process, the eggs are collected via a procedure called “aspiration” and prepared for fertilization. Fertilization takes place in our controlled laboratory setting.

When the eggs have been fertilized with sperm, they are allowed to develop in the laboratory for 3-5 days. In the meantime, the woman takes progesterone daily to help the uterine lining prepare for the implantation of an embryo. When the optimal time arrives, the most viable of the developing embryos are transferred to the uterus where they have the opportunity to implant in the uterine wall and develop into a pregnancy.

Advantages of Conventional IVF

Conventional IVF is a faster way of developing a successful pregnancy. There are also benefits in that the embryo can be tested for certain genetic disorders. If there are excess embryos, they can be frozen for future frozen embryo transfers. This method also allows for LGBTIQ parents to plan for a family using donor eggs or donor sperm.

Disadvantages of Conventional IVF

Conventional IVF may need more than one cycle to be successful. It requires several trips to the office for monitoring. Fertility medications can cause discomfort and may have some undesired side effects. These can include headache, gastrointestinal discomfort, nausea, breast tenderness or hot flashes.

Hyperstimulation syndrome is another effect of fertility drugs. Some women make experience vomiting, diarrhea, pain in the area of the ovaries, dark urine, decreased urination, rapid weight gain or shortness of breath. When this condition is severe, it can result in hospitalization and may be associated with a bad pregnancy outcome.

The medical team at Neway Fertility understands the risks and rewards that come with conventional IVF, and we will help you through every step of the way. Schedule a consultation appointment with one of our doctors to find out if conventional IVF is your best option for pregnancy.
