If you’re considering artificial insemination, you might be interested in the results of a new study from researchers in the United Kingdom that suggests the age of the donor doesn’t have as much effect on success rates as previously thought. In this study, the researchers looked at more than 39,000 first fertility treatment cycles using donor sperm and which were performed between 1991 and 2012.
What they found was that by either method, there was no difference in the success rates for achieving pregnancy or for live births, even when the men were in their mid-40s. In fact, the researchers report that success rates were actually slightly higher among middle-aged men than their 20-something counterparts.
But, while the age of the male partner appeared to make no difference up until middle age, the researchers noted that female age still appears to play a major role, with success rates dropping off as women reach their mid-30s. Sperm quality also continues to play a significant role.
Other factors that can have an effect on your success rates include:
- Whether you rest after the procedure: Lying flat for at least 15 minutes following your procedure can significantly increase your odds of conceiving. According to one study published in the British Medical Journal (BMJ), staying in a prone position for 15 minutes increases the likelihood of conception by an amazing 50%.
- The type of procedure you choose: Some clinicians report greater success with intrauterine insemination compared to intracervical insemination, likely due in part to the use of the special sperm-washing technique the IUI uses.
- Whether or not you use fertility drugs: If you’re a woman over age 35, your success rates can be greatly affected by your age. As a result, your chances for success may be increased if you take fertility medications. Your doctor will help you decide if they’re right or you.
